has a company ever contacted your current place of employment for a reference?

I’ve been working for a new company for close to 6 months now. I want to start applying elsewhere, and I’m not sure if I should put my current company on my resume or just leave a 6-month gap? If my current place finds out I’m trying to leave I’m getting canned. I’m paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford that hit.
