How did you get a "feeling" for what a good flat is in Zurich (area)

ihaveaquestion

So I am currently migrating to Switzerland. I speak native German and always had a good feel for the property market in other German countries (so Germany, Austria) because certain rules of thumb of what you would expect to pay for were quiet similar across many different cities.

I am trying to establish that understanding a bit in Zurich, which seems much more difficult. Prices for appartments I checked are all over the place, i.e., there is not such a clear trend as (for instance in Frankfurt, where I live currently) "ah prices in this area are super expensive, this seems to be the posh area, and prices here are dirt cheap careful this might be more of a ghetto". I see some apartments relatively reasonable priced and some for 3-4x the money even outside the Zentrum but in the same neighboorhood as other more reasonably priced.

I know these topics are often treated with annoyance, but really appreciating any advice re my situation:

I am quiet flexible re location because I don't need to be in central Zurich regularly and will travel a lot during the week. I am not looking necessarily for a permanent place, because I first want to check if the job is really for me & if I want to stay in the long-term (so i.e., 6 months short leases would be fine). If I decide after 3-4 months that "this is it" then I would be already on the ground, with a more established network and good view on the respective districts and look for my longer term home :)
