AITA for hiding from my mom that my girlfriend is coming with me to visit my family?
I (19M) live in Canada with my mom and her partner. Im currently included as a dependent child in his partner’s permanent residency application, so my status depends on them pretty much.
For some context, my mom thinks that my judgment is very poor and she doesn’t trust me. When I was 15 I was involved in an online relationship with a girl 9 years older than me. Looking back, it was crazy bad, and I admit my mistake.
More recently, I also made another big mistake. My mother spent months telling me to apply to CEGEP as soon as possible, but I didn’t do it because several professionals told me not to since tuition would be extremely expensive because of my immigration status. I decided to listen to them instead of my mom since I knew it would make things harder for her and she wouldn’t be able to pay for it. Months later, her partner found out that they were wrong, and I could actually go without paying that much, missing a year of my education (now I’ll start cegep this August).
Over the last 6 months, I’ve been studying two different schools, one in Canada to finish advanced physics, and online school from my country to go to University faster. Also, I’ve been working full time and helping them financially since last summer.
This year I planned a trip to my home country to visit my dad and the rest of my family, my mom knew about it. My girlfriend (18F) wanted to go too, as she was covering her own expenses, i didn’t see a reason of why not to. My dad and all my family were very positive about it, but I knew my mom wouldn’t, so I decided to keep it secret to her.
3 days before us leaving, I decided to tell her that my girlfriend was coming along, and she felt extremely betrayed and mad about it, she believes that I keep making the same mistake of putting my relationships before my own future and this trip with girlfriend is the example of that. But I can’t see how this is affecting my future, since I am already starting my career soon and money isn’t a problem now thanks to my family’s support at my home country. She also felt betrayed because my mom has financial issues (mortgage and debt) and she says that I don’t help her enough, even if I give her more than the half of my salary.
My mom and her partner demanded control over my banking, my phone, my email accounts and everything, and if I didn’t ceded, they would take the permanent residency from me, throwing my plans for my future away. I was forced to give them all my savings for them to “keep them safe” and I was also forced to break up with my girlfriend through a phone call where they were telling me what to say.
They gave me 2 options: go with her and take my PR away, or, go by myself, stop seeing her, give them control over everything and continue with the PR process.
I’ve done some research and my mother can actually decide not to include me on the PR process, so my girlfriend cancelled her trip after I told her everything, loosing over 2k. Still, she was supportive and understood the situation.
So, AITA for hiding my gfs company to visit my family from her? Am I making a mistake?
