[QCrit] The Greenfield Paradox, thriller, 71K, Second Attempt
Dear Agent,
THE GREENFIELD PARADOX is a 71,000 thriller that will appeal to fans of She Didn't See It Coming (2025) by Shari Lapena and In His Wake (2026) by Chad Zunker.
After moving to small-town North Carolina so his wife can take her dream job, journeyman blue-collar worker Danny Hall’s first day as a green deckhand on a North Carolina fishing boat ends with quite the surprise: a dead body in the nets.
After he finds out that the body belongs to a missing city councilwoman, and that the police have ruled her death a suicide, Danny begins to spiral. He just can’t believe someone so young and promising would have killed herself. Despite knowing that mental illness can’t be defined so simply, there’s something in the woman’s death that sticks with him as he becomes convinced that there’s something more to it.
Danny’s wife tries her best to convince him that there’s nothing abnormal going on. But, as his coworkers start dropping dead in suspicious-looking accidents, Danny becomes convinced that in finding the councilwoman’s body, the crew of the boat has stumbled onto something bigger. Once he’s the last one alive from his three-person crew, Danny is sure that he’s next.
On the police side, lone-wolf detective Jethro Christians has been assigned each case as they come. Each looks like a genuine suicide or accident, from the councilwoman to the boat crew, so he doesn’t see any reason to take Danny seriously at first. However, Danny is persistent, pestering Jethro to reconsider as circumstantial evidence linking all of the deaths begins to pile up. With that mounting evidence, Jethro is forced to reconsider whether these seeming accidents really were accidents, all while trying to prevent more dead bodies from entering the morgue.
Meanwhile, Danny’s marriage begins to fall apart as his mental wellbeing unravels, looking over his shoulder and jumping at shadows while helping Jethro to unveil the conspiracy he’s stumbled onto. When an attempt is finally made on Danny’s life, the breadcrumbs left behind lead right to the region’s homegrown billionaire.
