22F - First real research internship and I constantly feel like the dumbest person in the lab
I'm a 22-year-old doing my first proper research internship in a cancer research lab in Germany. I've been here for about 3 weeks now.
Overall, it's been a good experience. Everyone is nice, and I actually get to perform a lot of experiments instead of just watching. My supervisor gives me quite a bit of autonomy, which I appreciate because I get to learn by doing.
The problem is that I constantly feel like the least experienced person here. Most of the other students have already done 4-6 month internships during their bachelor's or master's, while this is basically my first real lab experience. I can't help comparing myself to them.
Sometimes I don't understand things that seem obvious to everyone else, or I ask what feel like really stupid technical questions. Afterwards, I replay the conversation in my head and think, "How did I not know that?" I also feel like I should be more independent and come up with my own ideas, but instead I often just feel lost.
My supervisor is kind and patient, but he's not the type to give a lot of reassurance or praise. I know that's probably just his personality, but part of me worries that he regrets taking me on or thinks I'm not good enough.
Logically, I know I'm there to learn. I know it's only been three weeks, and I try not to be too hard on myself. But emotionally, I still feel frustrated and anxious that I'm behind everyone else.
Has anyone else felt like this during their first research internship? Does it get better, or is this just part of learning how to do research?
