My mother had meningioma surgery and woke up blind – looking for others who have been through this
My mother had surgery to remove a suprasellar meningioma. The surgery went well, but she woke up with complete vision loss in both eyes (no light perception). She had littile vision in the right eye before surgery and left was blind before surgery.
A few days later she developed a severe vasospasm which caused right-sided weakness and speech issues. She spent time in the ICU and received treatment for the vasospasm. She is now home and slowly recovering – she can speak (though with difficulty) and walk with weakness.
Her vision is still completely black. The doctors have told us to give it 3 to 6 months to see if her vision improves.
My questions for anyone who has been through this:
- Did you or someone you know experience complete vision loss after meningioma surgery and see improvement over time?
- What was the timeline for recovery? How long before you saw the first signs?
- If you had "no light perception" – did you regain any functional vision?
- Did anyone experience vasospasm post-surgery that seemed to worsen vision, and did your vision eventually improve?
- What were the early signs of vision returning?
- If you are 1-2 years post-surgery, where is your vision now compared to right after surgery?
- Is there anything that helped your recovery?
I know every case is different. Just trying to understand what is possible. Thank you.
