Hair loss prevention while on test?

Hi guys, anyone's endo or GP prescribed them topical dutasteride shampoo to use weekly while on trt? My dad has male pattern baldness and I'm trying to be on hair loss prevention before being on trt. Just trying to gauge whether the dutasteride shampoo is effective as it requires compounding and costs nearly $100 a month. Cheers
