Learn traditional Chinese tea manners with Keats Chinese!

Finger tapping lets you silently thank people who pour tea for you, a quiet sign of respect in Chinese tea culture.

Where it came from

The tradition started with Qing Emperor Qianlong. When he secretly traveled and poured tea for his staff, they tapped the table with bent fingers instead of kneeling to keep his identity hidden. This custom later became a common polite gesture nationwide.

3 Basic Hand Taps

1. Elders / Bosses serve you tea

Make a fist, palm down, tap 3 times — shows utmost respect to seniors, teachers or leaders.

1. Friends / Colleagues serve you tea

Join index & middle fingers, tap 3 times — everyday thanks for people your age.

1. Younger folks / Staff serve you tea

Bend one finger, tap once — a soft nod to acknowledge their kindness.

Quick Tips from Keats Chinese

* Tap gently, do not hit the table hard
* Tap as tea is poured or once the pot is set aside
* Add eye contact and a smile for full etiquette
* Modern shortcut: The two-finger tap works for all situations

This small graceful gesture builds warmth and respect over tea. Next time you’re offered Chinese tea, use this quiet, elegant way to say thanks!
