Why can't Sony Playstation just sell placebo discs?
So I have a brilliant idea. Sony can continue their plan of phasing out physical discs and sell only digital version of games.
But. Hear me out.
They can continue selling "placebo discs."
What I mean is the game is purely and entirely digital and downloaded from the network, but the physical disc is just there for nostalgic purposes. It may or may not be purchased. You still need to connect to the PlayStation network and download the game. The disc is just there to satiate gamers' need for something tangible.
Like, ok, they can download a JRPG game without the disc. But if they must need a tangible disc, they can purchase this from a store, plug it in, and download the game from the network. The disc's utility is just an illusion just like the elevator open/close buttons are just an illusion (giving you a sense of control).
The disc actually does nothing. But it at least bears the package and sense of tangibility that gamers need.
Gamers can also plug it in but it's just an illusion.
I'd like to be paid my McKinsey consulting fees for this advice, pls.
