First time in saltwater

As the title suggests I've never really fished any sort of saltwater just fresh. But I'm going for a long weekend early august and we're renting a house on a dead end canal in Jamaica beach. Any tips either for the canals, inshore, or surf? I've got some spinning combos I plan on using in the canals and I'd be willing to pick up a surf combo. I
