Over the years, I’ve shared a foundational truth with many founders: historically, B2B startups go through the exact same six steps. When founders follow these steps in order, good things happen. When they try to break the sequence or skip ahead, more often than not, they find themselves in serious danger.

If you are currently building or scaling a B2B company, here is the exact progression you need to respect:

**Step 1: Prove the pain you see in the world is real.** Before you write code or build features, you have to validate that the problem actually exists and matters to the market. I’m often willing to take a founder's word on this initially if they have decades of experience in the trenches of a specific industry, but eventual proof is non-negotiable.

**Step 2: Prove you can solve that problem.** Once the pain is validated, you have to structurally demonstrate that your product or service actually alleviates it. Can you deliver on the promise?

**Step 3: Identify a sustainable business model.** You need to figure out the economics of how you will attract, win, and deploy your solution for that customer. There has to be an economic exchange that works symmetrically for them and for you.

**Step 4: Fill the top of your funnel.** Now that you have a proven solution and an economic model worth executing, your goal shifts to marketing and demand generation. This is where you aggressively fill the top of your funnel with an overwhelming volume of prospects.

**Step 5: Mature your overall organization.** With an explosion of demand comes operational strain. Step five is all about growing, structuring, and maturing your internal organization so it can successfully handle all the market demand you've generated without collapsing.

**Step 6: Shift your energy toward cash flow and profitability.** In the final stage of maturity, the core focus shifts. You move away from being exclusively obsessed with raw revenue growth, and you begin optimizing for growth in cash flows and net profitability.

Building a B2B startup is a marathon, not a sprint, and the order of operations matters. If you try to build a massive organization (Step 5) or pour money into top-of-funnel marketing (Step 4) before you've even proven the baseline economic model or the reality of the pain (Steps 1-3), the foundation will crumble.
