Lost in a NLP group

Seeking advice-academic

Hey!

So I’ve just finished up my first year in a University in the UK but I think I’ve hit some major walls.

I’m in an NLP group and my supervisor is a bit all over the place.

My focus is on mulitmodal AI (computer vision and NLP) and only one other person in the group has some computer vision experience.

Truth be told I have very little experience in both but I have taught myself a huge amount.

My primary supervisor’s background is in NLP, I see him at most once a week for 30-45 minutes but to be honest these meetings are rarely helpful. He’s not familiar with anything outside NLP, easily gets confused and has really high expectations (was asking for results before I even had a dataset).

I have a second supervisor who is really great and knows a lot about CV but I only see him about once a month for 30 minutes.

I have two problems:

  1. No one I know or work with has any experience in multimodality AI. I’m going to ask for another supervisor but I don’t know anyone in the space and ideally need someone who can meet regularly (once a week/fortnight for an hour would be great). Also it is likely my primary may freak out.

  2. There seems to be little to no resources for multimodal AI in our group. For example, our GPUs are pretty powerful (albeit available in 1s or 2s) but we have a lot of users and I think my project is too training intense for what we have. I could be wrong but this is where someone with more experience in this domain could correct me.

Honestly, I’m just so lost at this point and I’m not sure what to do.
