YA non-fiction book about soldiers in different eras, read at library in the early-mid 90s

I read and re-read a YA non-fiction book about soldiers in different eras back in the early-mid 1990s that I’d love to be able to show my own child who is very interested in history.

The book focused on the representative story of a single soldier in each era (e.g., a Roman legionary, English longbowman, a Tommy in WWI, an American in Vietnam), and talked about their experience, equipment, diet, etc. Each era had hand-drawn illustrations of the soldier and their equipment (not DK-style photographs).

It is not a DK eyewitness book (I’ve explored that before). Would welcome any assistance!
