New teaching job offer withdrawn after my former school provided a reference — what can I do?

I worked as a teacher at a school for a few months and resigned after being placed on an informal support plan. At the time of my resignation, I understood that I would receive a professional reference.

I recently interviewed for another teaching position and was offered the job, subject to satisfactory references. However, the new school later withdrew the offer after receiving my references, saying that some concerns had been raised.

I have not seen the reference, so I do not know exactly what was written. I have submitted a Subject Access Request to my former school and am currently waiting for the relevant documents.

I am very worried because schools generally require a reference from the most recent employer, so I cannot simply use a different referee. I am concerned that the same thing could happen again even if I successfully interview and receive another offer.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Were you eventually able to secure another teaching job? Is there anything practical I can do while waiting to see the reference?

I am also seeking professional advice, but I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation.
