Does the quality of the linen matter?
Hello! I want to start oil painting soon, and would like to stretch my own linen canvases. Where I live, a linen canvas is very expensive, and I'd like the durability without breaking the bank. However, from the research I've done about stretching canvases, I've seen two separate people mention that belgian linen is the best. That kind of high quality stuff would also be really expensive. I've been thinking, would the quality of the fabric actually matter at all? Linen is linen, I'd assume the high end stuff has the same overall properties of the cheaper stuff. Besides, if I'm covering it in glue and that linseed oil+chalk misture, the feel and smoothness of it certainly won't matter. So, would any raw linen do, or would cheaper linen affect the durability? Why do people say belgian linen is best?
