How to stop yourself when you're hyperfocused on the wrong thing?

Need to vent/ask about something that's been really turning my life upside down.

When I do something unproductive like scrolling, shopping, or gaming I feel like I just get sucked down that rabbit hole and can't leave. One time I even stayed up all night just to finish one task I was doing, and I remember in that moment I was completely focused on that and couldn't even pull myself out. Getting yanked out mid-hyperfocus feels terrible, I get irritated, sometimes I just go right back to it anyway.

What gets me is I know this same thing, when it happens to point at the right thing, is honestly one of the best parts of my brain. I've had hyperfocus sessions on stuff that actually mattered where I got more done in two hours than I would in a normal week. So it's not like I want to get rid of it. I just have zero control over which thing it decides to lock onto.

I've tried timers and app blockers but they don't really solve this part — they either try to stop me before I start (doesn't work, I get around it or ignore it) or they don't exist at all for the "already 45 minutes deep" moment.

So asking people who deal with this: How often do you struggle with this if at all and how big of an effect has it had? What solutions have you all tried and did it work? Do you have any tips on how to get into the productive hyper focus easier?

Not looking for "just use willpower". I tried that and it doesn't work. Trying to figure out if this is just how my brain works or if it's common.
