My (35M) girlfriend (33F) wants me to promise to never drink

I used to drink quite a bit when I was in college, probably more than was healthy, but was never addicted. After college I eventually stopped as I got older and didn't like how it made me feel. I don't generally volunteer this information, but if someone asks I try to be honest.

The only drink I've had in the past five years was a beer with my best friend who was grieving a miscarriage. Even though I don't like the feel, I thought it was worth it as I know he would appreciate the gesture.

During a discussion recently, my girlfriend of six months asked me to promise to not ever drink. Her concern is that it can be a slippery slope that can lead to addiction. She had a neighbor whose daughter struggled with alcohol addiction and she watched her destroy her life growing up.

On the flip side, she has many family members that drink in moderation. She says that she's uncomfortable with that, but doesn't want to tell them as she feels it would be controlling.

I don't plan on drinking, but I also want to feel comfortable having a beer with someone if I think joining them in a beer could bring comfort and I judge it worth the ickiness.

We're stuck at the moment, with her holding a firm line that she doesn't want me drinking while I'm holding a firm line that I don't want to promise something that could go against doing what I think is best in the future.

How can I approach this conversation with my girlfriend and are there any compromises that you can suggest that may help us resolve this conflict?
