It Doesn't Hurt When It Hurts - Recovered in Andrew's Room

Writing Sample

The shift doesn’t happen gradually. It’s a sudden, violent tearing of the fabric, right at the moment when the room is supposed to be at its quietest.

One minute, the air is completely still—heavy with the warmth of a shared trajectory, the kind of absolute trust where you’ve completely dropped your guard because you think you’re safe. We were right there, completely open, resting in the aftermath of being as close as two people can get.

And then, a single word lands like a spark on dry wood.

Suddenly, the warmth vanishes, replaced by a cold, sharp panic as the ground starts giving way beneath us. The argument doesn’t build; it erupts. The words aren't just disagreements—they are precise, targeted strikes aimed directly at the softest, most exposed places we had revealed to each other only moments before. It’s dizzying how fast the intimacy twists into a weapon. The same hands that were holding you a second ago are now clenched, the air thick with an escalation so sudden it makes your chest tight.

You look across the small distance of the room at someone you know completely, but the look in their eyes is entirely alien. The trust doesn’t just break; it shatters, leaving this jagged, dangerous edge between us where there used to be a clearing. The room is still small, but the space between us has suddenly become an impossible, hostile gulf.
