Hit with a sudden role change/demotion and I feel completely shaken

Vent

I’m having one of those work moments that feels so big and destabilizing that I don’t really know where else to put it.

I’m a mom with a young child, and my family recently bought a house, so the financial pressure of keeping my job is very real.

I’ve been in a senior leadership role at a small company, building a function that did not really exist before I joined. It has been a hard, messy, under-resourced environment, but I have cared a lot and have genuinely tried to make things better.

Today I was told that leadership no longer sees me continuing in the role I was hired/positioned for long term. They want to move me into a different, lower-level role with the same compensation. It was framed as being more aligned to my strengths, but it feels like a demotion and like my professional identity just got completely punched in the face. To make it worse, they are moving me under who was previously my partner (I’m in product, he’s my engineering counterpart)

I know logically that the company is under a lot of pressure and that this may be about restructuring, leadership panic, and shifting expectations more than it is about my actual ability. But emotionally, I feel so much shame. I feel embarrassed. I feel like everyone can see that I wasn’t “good enough,” even though I also know that is probably not the full truth.

I’ve spent most of the day since getting the news sitting in my closet because I feel so nauseous and humiliated. And now I have to go pick up my toddler, and I can’t even face her without feeling like I somehow failed her. The pressure of being a mom and needing to provide while also feeling professionally gutted is just crushing me right now.

I’m trying not to make any rushed decisions. I’m waiting for the details in writing. I’m also in conversations for other roles, and I’m terrified that this feeling is going to leak into those interviews. I don’t want to show up sounding wounded or desperate. I want to be composed and strategic, but right now I honestly feel like I’m barely holding it together.

For other working moms who have been through a major career blow, demotion, restructure, loss of sponsorship, or just a job that suddenly turned on you: how did you get through the first few days? How did you separate the company’s judgment from your own self-worth? How did you protect your family financially without accepting something that felt degrading? And how did you keep showing up for interviews or other opportunities while you were still processing?

I think I mostly just need to hear that other people have had something like this happen and still rebuilt, still found good roles, still felt like themselves again. Logical me knows the company is a mess and that the CEO (my boss) set me up for failure. Illogical me thinks this is a sign that I am a fraud and have never been good at this job.
