2 or 3 nights in Hana?
We will have 8 nights on Maui and I cannot decide if I want to split it as 2 in Hana and 6 in Kihei, or 3 in Hana and 5 in Kihei. We are in the very preliminary stages of planning so have not yet made firm plans yet but we are a couple in our mid 30s and generally like to see beautiful sights and landscapes but at a slower pace where we still feel like we are relaxing while on vacation.
We are not in the best shape but do walk 10k-15k steps a day living in NYC and have done easy to moderate hikes up to around 8-10 miles but prefer to keep activities lighter while on vacation. We also love just hanging out on the beach and wandering around towns, which we plan to do in Kihei.
Most itineraries I see for Hana say 2 nights are enough for people wanting to keep it light, and 3 nights for serious hikers or people wanting to do more extreme excursions. We certainly fall into the "wanting to keep it light" category, but I still feel like 3 nights sounds better?
With 2 nights you really only have 1 full day to do hit all the sights. I understand many people do the Road to Hana and back in a single day as a road trip, and I feel as if staying 2 nights sort of would sort of resemble that because we'd be hitting as much as possible in our one full day.
On the other side of it, I see the benefit of having an extra night in Kihei as well. We will likely spend at least 1 full day from Kihei on tours (farm tour and pineapple tour) and possibly the sunset at the Haleakalā summit. Taking away our arrival and departure day, this doesn't leave us many days to just explore Kihei and veg out on the beach.
I know the obvious answer is to add an extra day to the trip, but we really cannot. If you were us, what would you do?
