Hey everyone!

I’m one of the founding mods of r/WidowsvsJohnsDebt, and I want to start by sharing my own story, so you know exactly why this space exists and why you are not alone.

My husband chased me for about a year and a half just to date me. When we finally started dating, everything felt perfect. Very quickly, he wanted to marry me. When I said yes, he told me: “Wonderful. Now I have to find a way to bring in money so we can buy a house and build our future.” We made full plans together – a home, a shared life, stability.

He started working as a contractor to “save up” for us. We got married in 2024. He died in February 2026. On the day of his funeral, after the burial, I opened up his papers and accounts and had to face the truth: he had debts, nothing saved, and the money had gone to hotels, Airbnbs, prostitutes, dating apps, and other women. No nest egg. No house. Just betrayal and bills.

And it wasn’t “just” sex work or random women. He also pulled another woman into his life in a deeply manipulative way. She has no real friends, and he told her what clothes to wear, how to style her hair, basically that she should look like me – even though she is much bigger than me and, in his eyes, had to be reshaped to fit his fantasy. She did what he said. She has a six-year-old son, and she dragged that child into this mess too. He was her supervisor at work, there was a power imbalance, and she now claims she knew nothing.

He got sick and he knew something was really wrong – that he either had to go to a doctor or it would be over. To me, he always said it was “just a flu” or “just a cold.” That’s the story he stuck to until he died. I sat there after his death with his debts and the shock of discovering how he had really been living behind my back.

I was lucky in one way: I did not end up legally responsible for his debts. But that doesn’t erase the trauma of finding out at the funeral that the man I loved had built our future on lies, secret spending, and hidden lives. Now I fight for every cent I can get as a result of his death, and I am finally living my life in a way I never have before – with my eyes open, my power in my hands, and no more illusions.

I’m sharing this here because:

This happens to more widows and partners than most people realize.

The financial betrayal is one part, but the emotional and psychological betrayal cuts even deeper.

If you’ve found out after his death that money went to sex work, affairs, hotels, or a secret life, you are not crazy and you are not alone.

If you want to, share your story below or in your own post. You don’t have to be “calm” or “polite” about it. You can be angry, devastated, numb, confused – all of it is valid here.

r/WidowsvsJohnsDebt exists because of stories like mine and like yours.
