Absent CSP, was offered tfmr
Hi everyone,
I’m currently 23 weeks pregnant with my baby boy ( second pregnancy, I have a toddler boy), and I’m going through one of the hardest times of my life. I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar.
Everything started after my anatomy scan, when the doctors noticed that they couldn’t clearly visualize the cavum septum pellucidum (CSP). I was referred to Maternal-Fetal Medicine, where I had another detailed ultrasound. They also performed a transvaginal ultrasound, and unfortunately they still could not identify the CSP.
At my most recent appointment, the MFM physician told me that they believe the CSP is absent. The rest of my baby’s anatomy appears normal, and there are no other structural brain abnormalities seen on ultrasound. They explained that an absent CSP can sometimes be isolated, but it can also be associated with conditions such as agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) or septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). They told me that ultrasound alone cannot determine which situation we’re dealing with.
They offered fetal MRI but said they usually prefer to perform it later in pregnancy because the images are more accurate. The problem is that I was also told that if I were to consider termination depending on the MRI findings, I would need to make that decision before 24 weeks. Because of that, I’ve asked if it’s possible to have the MRI scheduled sooner, and I’m currently waiting to hear back.
I honestly feel like I’m living in limbo. I love this baby more than anything, but I also want to understand what his future might look like before making any decisions. The uncertainty has been incredibly overwhelming.
Has anyone had:
An absent CSP on ultrasound that later turned out to be something less serious?
An MRI that showed more reassuring findings than the ultrasound?
Isolated absent CSP with a good outcome?
ACC or SOD diagnosed after absent CSP?
How far along were you when your MRI was performed? Were you able to get it earlier than the standard timing?
I know every pregnancy is different, but hearing other people’s experiences would really mean a lot to me right now.
Thank you so much for reading.
