Health Insurance for Retirees in the UK
Hi everyone,
I see a lot of questions here about navigating private medical insurance (PMI) when approaching retirement, especially for those leaving a company scheme. I thought it might be useful to summarise a few key points on this, as it's a situation where a bit of knowledge can make a huge difference.
When you retire, you typically lose your spot on your employer's group policy. The main concern is what happens to conditions that developed while you were covered by that plan.
The most important concept to understand is the 'continuation option'. Most major insurers offer this, allowing you to switch from your company's group scheme to an individual policy with them, crucially, without new medical underwriting.
This is the single biggest advantage. It means the insurer agrees to continue covering any conditions that arose and were eligible for cover under your company plan. If you were to shop around for a brand new policy with a different provider, any of those conditions would almost certainly be excluded as pre-existing.
The process is usually straightforward:
- Your insurer will likely contact you near your retirement date with an offer to continue your cover.
- You'll have a limited window to accept this offer, often around 30-90 days, so it's important not to miss it.
- If you accept, you move to a personal plan, and your underwriting terms are carried over.
Essentially, choosing the continuation option protects the cover you've already "earned" for conditions that have appeared over the years. Starting fresh with a new insurer means starting with a clean slate, where your recent medical history will lead to new exclusions.
Full disclosure: these insights are from a guide I work on, and this is one of the most frequent and critical topics we see for people in this age group.
For those in the community who have gone through this process when retiring: did you find the continuation offer from your existing insurer was competitive, or did you end up finding better value by taking out a new, freshly underwritten policy and accepting the exclusions that came with it?
