Some things I've learned as a reseller for the past year
As title says, I've been reselling used items for the past year, bought in thrift stores, Vinted, FB marketplace, and sold on Ebay, Vinted and FB marketplace. Here's some takeaways from my experience:
- Package your things well.
- Seriously. It's not worth the negative reviews. Do some research on what things are worth putting in bubble wrap and which ones are fine to toss into a bag.
- Don't get stuck on the cheap things that can be fixed and sold for 2x or 3x the price.
- It might seem fun and easy, but it takes up too much time which could easily be invested in one or two more expensive things that can be fixed and sold for half or 2x the price you paid. But if you don't have the budget, cheaper things can be a great starter. Sports merch, for example. Especially teams/players that are doing well currently.
- Do research on what actually sells.
- Found a basketball shirt for an unreal price in good condition? But do they have any actual fans that would buy it? Think about whether its worth the wait until it sells.
- Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate.
- it's always worth trying to negotiate the price down. Even if your first request is denied, try chatting with them about it, especially if the item has been listed for more than a month. Very easy way to increase profits this way.
- Specific for Vinted - if the seller offers bundles, take advantage of it on more expensive items.
- Say, a seller offers a laptop for 200€ but are also selling their old clothing, 1-3€ a piece. If they also have bundle function on, you can buy 4 (or however many items needed to activate the bundle) of the cheaper shirts AND the laptop, then pay ~160€ total.
- Keep track of your earnings and on which items.
- it's good to make an excel sheet on your finances for this so you can analyze what's selling well and what isn't. What things profit the best, which takes the least amount of time to sell and so on.
- Don't be afraid of reselling fake items, just be upfront about it not being original.
- these things still get a nice profit, especially if you pay a good price on it yourself.
- Remember to touch some grass.
- I know it can be tempting to scroll for things to resell half the day, but it won't pay the same as a real job unless you live in a warehouse and do this full time or have a big budget to begin with. Pick your priorities.
- A bit of a sketchy one to mention here, but have some morals too.
- Don't resell critical items. I've seen people reselling diapers and baby formula because they got it on sale. Don't be that guy.
