Is James Sunderland a POS?

I’m not that familiar with the storyline of SilentHill and have only recently gotten into playing it for myself after watching my dad play when I was a kid. All I think I remember of James’ character is that he killed his wife and kind of just went to silent hill to earn pity points and put on an act as an all loving devoted husband trying to avenge his wife (though please correct me with that if I’m wrong because it was a while ago LOL) but based on that memory I very clearly don’t like him. Playing as James in Silent Hill 2 is infuriating to me as I just don’t like his character because of what I remember, am I going to like him more as the game progresses or is it going to stay like this until the end and does anyone else feel the same?

Edit: Thank you to all the people who have replied, reading what other people think has been really interesting! After doing some more reading about the game I have a follow up question, if silent hill as a whole and thus the monsters within it are projections of James’ fractured psyche, is there anything that can be said about James’ attitudes towards women through the fact that a few of them seem sexualised (e.g. the Bubble Head Nurses or the Mannequins). Maybe I’m just nitpicking flaws within him but I’d also like to know anyone’s opinions on that too! Thank you again :)
