Referred for IV iron, should I do it?

Hi!

30F, 5’6”, 115lb

Diagnoses: bipolar, OCD, mild obstructive sleep apnea

So, I’ve had a history of low-ish ferritin. Not crazy low, but these are all of my values:

8/16/16: 15
10/25/22: 21
10/30/23: 58*
8/6/24: 16.8
5/29/2025: 21.5
3/6/2026: 25.4

*Possibly relevant: struggled with mild eating disorder in few months leading up to 10/2023 reading (lost \~10lb), I know that can elevate levels

I’ve been taking iron consistently since fall of 2022 (Thorne Ferosorb, 36mg iron biglycinate, recently been taking 2 a day, very careful about not taking near meals)

My hemoglobin levels have always been normal (12-13), other than one low very slightly low reading summer 2024 (11.4, went back up to 12.3 only a few weeks later).

WBCs usually on the low side (last reading 3.5, 3/6/26), everything else very normal.

I asked my PCP about iron infusions (wondering if they’d be good to get my ferritin up and optimize health, help with energy and brain fog). She said yes. Apparently cutoff used to be 20 but is now 30.

Lucky to have a PCP who’s very liberal about ordering treatments patients request, but it also makes me nervous that I’d be getting unnecessary medical care.

Anyway, I’m just trying to figure out whether or not it’s a good idea/worth it to try the infusions. They’d be free with my insurance, but I’m very nervous about doing more harm to my body than good (oxidative stress, etc) and taking on potential side effect risks that are not worth it.

But I’m also curious if they’d benefit me, given that I’m not sure I’ve ever really felt what it’s like to have fully normal ferritin levels for an extended period. Curious if it would help me feel more energized and maybe benefit my mental health/improve brain fog. I do occasionally have days where I feel very weak/like I have to sit down to avoid passing out but may be unrelated.

Feel really stuck trying to decide. Any and all advice appreciated! Thanks so much for reading! :)
