How I did it
Made another post yesterday about my recovery process and journey with Rj. So this is how I did it.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, psychiatrist, or medical professional. The following is based purely on my personal recovery journey and my own research into OCD management. Supplements can interact with medications (especially SSRIs) and cause side effects. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen or changing your dosages.
What is Retroactive Jealousy (RJ)?
RJ isn’t standard relationship jealousy. It is a form of OCD where your brain fixates on your partner’s past relationships or sexual history. It floods your mind with intrusive thoughts, mental movies, and an overwhelming urge to investigate or ask questions. It essentially tricks your brain into treating your partner's past as an active, dangerous threat to your present.
NAC & Magnesium for Retroactive Jealousy OCD
The intrusive thoughts are relentless and feel real, but they’re not reality—they’re just your brain stuck in a loop.
NAC (N-Acetylcysteine): This is the one with actual research behind it. It reduces glutamate (the brain chemical that misfires in OCD). A lot of people see real improvement within a few weeks, especially if you’re also on an SSRI.
Magnesium: Calms down the hyperactivity in your brain. Turns down the volume on those stuck thoughts so they don’t spiral as easily.
Other stuff worth trying:
** **Inositol & Glycine: Help with serotonin production and balance out the glutamate system.
5-HTP, B6, folate, zinc, vitamin C: Basically building blocks for serotonin. (Note: Do NOT mix 5-HTP with an SSRI antidepressant without talking to a doctor first).
How to actually manage RJ:
Don’t ask your partner for reassurance. I know you want to, but every time you do, it feels good for like 5 minutes then the thoughts come roaring back worse. The reassurance feeds the OCD.
Don’t avoid your partner or avoid thinking about it either. Avoidance makes OCD stronger. You gotta sit with the uncomfortable feeling and let it pass.
Get a therapist who knows OCD - specifically one who does ERP (Exposure & Response Prevention). This is the real game changer. You learn to tolerate the thoughts without fighting them or seeking reassurance.
Stop researching. Don’t google their exes, don’t scroll through old photos, don’t deep dive into details. That’s just fuel for the spiral.
Accept that you’ll never have 100% certainty about the past. That’s the hardest part but it’s also where the real healing happens.
Talk to your doctor before starting supplements. But seriously - supplements + therapy + accepting uncertainty = actual recovery.
