Did I do a miracle? Or a disaster?
I bought a Gunnir Arc A380 a few weeks ago and I love linux. Prior to buying it, I researched a bit about the gpu and its reliability on linux, as I'm sort of a linux guy (just run linux on my pc, no fancy wisdom I just know the basics). but I was devastated to find that the card had zero rpm mode which I couldn't turn off. I could control the fan curve in windows easily through the Arc control software. But in linux, I tried a lot to set a custom fan curve (tried using lact, cooler control, fancontrol sucks idk why) as my gpu would sit at 54 degrees, then the fans turn on, cooling it by a degree then shutting of, then spinning up again, then stopping again. I thought this would greatly damage the gpu fans. So what I did:
- Unplugged the fan plug (6 pins) without dismantling the gpu at all
- Directly connected the +12v and Gnd to a motherboard header using breadboard jumper cables
Now I can control the fans through DC, though it's PWM. I've set 40% fan speed in bios and now the fans spin correctly all the time! Is this safe?
And when I boot the pc, the gpu fans spin at full speed (3k rpm) for a sec then slow down to match the curve. I've tested raising and decreasing the curve and the fans respond well.
So, is it a miracle or a future disaster? I'm really scared...
