unsure of FA’s intentions after break up
unsure about FA’s intentions
hi everyone. my fearful avoidant ex (male) broke up with me (female) about a week ago. our relationship lasted 11 months. for the last 3-4 months of our relationship, my ex and i had the classic avoidant-anxious push and pull. i am anxious attached, he is fearful avoidant. we had a lot in common, we talked about getting married, and i truly felt like i had found my person. the feelings were mutual on his end. i also wasn’t aware of the anxious-avoidant dynamic until after the relationship already ended.
our fights usually consisted of me bringing up my needs or concerns in the relationship. for example, him having a groupchat with three other women he used to work with. they even used pet names with each other, but he played it off as being “friendly” and that that was just their dynamic. i can admit, i was anxious about his actions and needed reassurance. however, when i would bring up my insecurities, he would blame shift, and say that i am making him out to be a “villain.” our fights then would last 2-3 days because his ego would be hurt about me needing to feel safe and wanting to talk about true concerns. i am also realizing that i kept bringing up the same issues because he truly struggled to take accountability and resolve the conflict effectively.
as a result, he stated he became mentally exhausted, withered and like a shell of himself because of the relationship. it felt like a situation where he wasn’t tired of me, he was tired of the relationship and its demands. when we broke up, he said his door is always open for me, and in time we would try again because our love is deep, we share similar goals, and we connected very well. he stated that “space is necessary for us to have clarity.” i have been in no contact, and i don’t plan on ever reaching out as he initiated the break up and said he needs space. as much as i miss him, i don’t think it would be wise for me to break no contact in the future.
what do other FA’s make of this experience? is there a possibility he will reach out in the future, or did he just say that so he wouldn’t be the “bad guy”? is it common for FA’s to be unable to handle relationship concerns, and make the other person apologize? any thoughts or insight would be of great help.
