Need help supporting friend with bipolar
Hi everyone.
I am posting here in hopes to seek support for my friend who suffers from bipolar disorder.
My friend opened up to me last year about struggling with “manic depression” but he didn’t realise that manic depression is an outdated term for bipolar disorder. When I told him that, he seemed shocked, but I was genuinely concerned by this because I can see how much this disorder impacts his life and it doesn’t seem like he has a whole lot of knowledge around the disorder, including how to treat or manage it.
He is extremely vulnerable at the moment. Currently homeless, unemployed and has little to no money most of the time (he usually spends the money he gets recklessly and the rest on bills/debts). He doesn’t currently see a therapist but he is on antidepressants.
From what I’ve seen, he struggles the most with depression and he tends to isolate/ghost when he is in the depths of this. It caused a lot of issues in our friendship before I found out he struggled with bipolar disorder, and from what he has told me, it has destroyed a lot of his other friendships. He has a lot of online friends, and he claims I am his only friend IRL. He previously struggled with SH and from what I know, currently struggles with passive suicidal ideation. I worry about his mental state tremendously and the lack of support he has while dealing with this disorder.
I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can best support my friend? Please share any ideas, tips, advice, etc. It would be much appreciated.
Thank you for reading.
