Weird recruiter call - Common for companies to screen candidates out even if living within GTA?

I applied for a Mississauga based startup and received a return call that lasted only 30 seconds. Apparently I was screened out because I lived more than 30 minutes away in commuting distance from the office.

Is this a common screening criterion amidst this illogical job market? Overall a pretty weird experience that did not merit asking follow up questions.
