2 years flipping phones on Facebook Marketplace UK, happy to share what I know
Phones are my main niche and I've been doing it for 2 years now, 600+ transactions. Thought I'd post here in case anyone's working the same niche or thinking about starting.
Today: 3 phones, one FB Marketplace ad, £250+ profit.
What works for me:
Sourcing. Facebook Marketplace is still the best. Search things like "needs gone today" or "upgrade" in listings, that's where the motivated sellers are. People who just got a new phone want the old one gone fast and price accordingly. Weekday mornings before the weekend crowd is key.
What to buy. iPhones in the £80-250 buy range are your bread and butter, they hold value and sell fast. Cheap Androids under £40 buy price are a trap, low margins and hard to shift. Newer flagships are higher margin but more capital tied up, and one bad buy hurts.
Checks. Non-negotiable with phones. IMEI check before you hand over cash, make sure it's not blacklisted or still on finance. iCloud or Google account signed out in front of you. Check battery health on iPhones too, anything under 85% needs to be priced in. One locked phone wipes out the profit from three good flips.
Pricing. Most people underprice because they're impatient. Give it 48-72 hours at your target price before dropping. A £100 buy should sell at £180+, not £130.
Listing quality. Natural light, clean background, screen on, close-ups of any marks. Put the exact model, storage and battery health in the title. This alone adds £20-40 to every sale. Most phone listings are one blurry photo and "good condition" so you immediately stand out.
Margins. At the £80-250 buy range, average margin is £50-100 per phone. Total time per flip is 1-2 hours including collection and listing, phones are quick compared to bigger items.
A few friendly tips if you're starting out: meet somewhere public and busy, test the phone properly before paying, don't get emotional over one deal because there's always another tomorrow, and be straight about condition in your listings. Honest listings sell faster and you get way fewer returns and complaints.
Now what's improved this massively in the last few weeks is using instant alerts. When a phone gets uploaded at a certain price on Marketplace I get pinged and I message them within 5 minutes. With phones the good deals go in under an hour, so being first has genuinely changed the game for me recently.
Anyone else doing phones here? Curious what price ranges others are working and what the local market looks like outside London.
