wow. Rather dramatic and deep in concept. I can see why it is so highly praised. I could talk about the message of the movie but that would get me talking for way too long and I can't be bothered with that right now. Besides Disney didn't write the story anyhow although they portrayed it well.

The acting is of course great as most of these live action Disney movies are at this time but they really show their skills in this one. The emotions especially of the captain are so well done. I love this type of story. A bittersweet tale of humanity and morals. A slow psychological insight into a character you start hating but by the end you understand them and sympathise with them. In the end, no one person was really to blame but humanity itself makes the outcome inevitable.

The effects of the giant squid were surprisingly effective for the time and impressed me. Those kind of effects are awesome coz they don't age as badly as things like 3D computer graphics. I miss puppetry in movies ;^;

The only thing I could criticise which I think is debatable is the length of the movie. Did it really need to be more than 2 hours long? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, the normal length of 1 hour and 30mins wouldn't have been long enough to really show the slow insight into the captain's mind.

However, there was quite a bit of wasted time at the beginning which wasn't really needed just to set the scenes. I think they got a bit carried away with showing the special effects there and could have cut some time from that. It literally took 17mins to even get to the sub in question and there is more time wasted showing harvesting. Then again, I'm not sure coz maybe we needed the slow build up for the ending half to have more impact. What do you think?

Overall, an amazing watch and I highly recommend it. This is the type of message we are sorely lacking in recent movies.
