Why do guns have scratches and look used?

I wanted to buy a skin and noticed that the value goes down if they look used. My friend told me that it happens while you play. Like, the longer you use it the more scratches there will be. But then I googled it up and it said that the scratches are just for ascetics. My friend is sure that they are right though 😑

So, is it true that it gets damaged?
