New study: AI surfaces YouTube in answers more than 25% of the time
YouTube videos are showing up as sources inside AI chatbot answers more than one in four times, according to new research from Jellyfish.
Jellyfish, the AI arm of The Brandtech Group, analyzed 27 million responses across seven AI assistants — including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Meta AI, and Perplexity — and found that independent, niche creators are outranking brand-owned content and celebrity influencers as the sources these tools cite most. In high-intent categories like consumer electronics or financial services, nearly half of all AI answers point back to a YouTube video.
It isn't slick production values or celebrity names driving those citations, it's a specific creator explaining something in a video more than ten minutes long.
You don't need a huge media budget to become the source AI cites on a topic. You just need a camera, a real understanding of the material, and the patience to go past the three-minute mark.
Here's where to start:
- Pick one question customers ask you constantly (pricing, process, how something actually works, etc), and film yourself answering it in full, to at least the 10-minute mark.
- Skip the polish. Specific and slightly rough is outperforming produced and generic in these citations.
- Go deep on one topic before spreading across many. Own a single lane to increase your chances of being cited.
