Do I really need multiple jackets for each season?

I’m moving to nyc next week and I have three jackets prepared: one winter puffer, one rain/wind jacket, and one thick short formal coat. I already have a cardigan packed. I will be working as a teacher that requires everyone to wear very formal hence the formal jacket. I’m not sure if I will really need it tho. From a minimalist video I watched, the op said if I hesitate or question a lot on certain items to bring, then don’t bring it.
