Advice for an International Student Renting a Place

Hi! I am an international student from Canada. I have to sign a lease to process my visa application which is scary because I have never been to Portugal! Does anyone have opinions on thoughts on the student residences? They seem like the most secure option for the first year but the administrative fees are expensive af. Is transit bad? Should I try to find something independent but near feup?
