The reality of being a Social Media Manager that no one talks about

Everyone sees the aesthetic posts, viral videos, and "fun" side of social media management. What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes.

You're expected to be:

  • A graphic designer.
  • A video editor.
  • A copywriter.
  • A photographer.
  • A marketer.
  • A customer service representative.
  • A trend researcher.
  • A data analyst.
  • A strategist.
  • And somehow still be "creative" every single day.

People think we just post on Facebook or Instagram.

In reality, we're answering messages at midnight, dealing with last-minute revisions, chasing approvals, fixing mistakes before anyone notices, handling negative comments professionally, and constantly worrying about algorithms changing again.

One post can take hours—or even days—to create. Then someone asks, "Can you just make a quick post?" 😅

The pressure is exhausting because social media never really sleeps. If engagement drops, it's your fault. If a post goes viral, everyone thinks it was just luck.

Burnout is real in this industry.

I still love creating content and helping brands grow, but I wish more people understood that social media management is a real profession with real skills—not just scrolling on your phone all day.

To my fellow social media managers: I see you. You're doing more than most people realize.

What's one thing you wish clients or employers understood about our job?
