2 piece rod coming apart

I have a 2 piece ugly stik rod that I like. It keeps coming apart after a few casts. I saw people talking about the trick where you put the 2nd piece on and rotate it and that seemed to lock the top piece in. I’m assuming the best way to take it off is to rotate it back then lift it off? Or do I just pull it straight off? And what is the difference between that and using that wax people recommend? Does the wax create that “suction”? Thank you
