Van Der Graaf Generator kinda creeps me out
So I've been a fan of a good number of the major "classic" bands for a good 20 years now - Yes, ELP, Tull, Genesis, Crimson, Rush, Gentle Giant - and wanted to do a deep dive into the catalogue of Van Der Graaf Generator. I have heard bits and pieces before, watched some youtube performances, etc, but lately I've been running through their catalogue in chronological order while out jogging. And I gotta say, a lot of their music creeps me out. I've listened to lots of cacophonous and dissonant music before but something about the way VDGG does it, I find unsettling. Like when Crimson or ELP does it, its usually done in a way where its kind of showcasing the player's virtuoso talents, but with VDGG, it seems to be done in a more atmospheric way, kind of like the early psychedelic Floyd but with off-kilter rhythms and a guy who kind of sounds like a bit of a madman when he sings 😁
