Leaving Cheyenne, Thalia
What an excellent little book. Johnny McCloud and Gideon Frye felt like prototypes that would eventually become Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, respectively. I did not expect the perspective change, and was very happy to get insight from all three of the principal cast! I also very much enjoyed how McMurtry spiced this one up. Molly’s relationship with her son Jimmy is a great example: it didn’t become the main focus of her chapters, but added a lot of subtext and really helped to shape and expand her character. He is really good at giving the reader just enough to chew on, while neither satiating nor starving them.
I have really enjoyed the Thalia trilogy, thus far, and am going to have to pace myself so that I don’t read the Last Picture show in one sitting.
(Not sure why I used a bunch of food metaphors. I might be hungry)
