Why TVRD spiked today, 70M shares churning a 5.7M float in a single session

Float math first

Start with the structure: 5.7M freely trading shares on a ~$19M cap. Roughly 70M shares changed hands today, about 245 times normal volume, meaning the float recycled a dozen times before the close. At that ratio price discovery basically stops and you're watching a queue of market orders.

The trigger

A Phase 1 readout on TTI-109, Tvardi's next-generation STAT3 inhibitor. It converted to the active drug as designed, exposure scaled with dose, and gut side effects were much milder than the older compound's. First-in-human safety data, nothing more. The company also noted that further development needs funding.

How it traded

Weak start, $1.95 low after the bell, then the vertical leg. Stock Pulse pinged it at 10:59 ET at $3.27 and it topped $3.86 fourteen minutes later. From there, a slide: $2.75 area at lunch, $3.10 at the finish. Up 54% from yesterday, down 20% from the top, under the alert level.

Worth remembering

  • The lead asset failed Phase 2 in IPF in October, and the 52w high of $43.65 is the before picture
  • There's a going-concern flag in the last 10-Q; the ~7% short interest was fuel, not cause
  • Momentum event, fully in the rearview
