Far Cry Primal: What's up with dying and respawning and beast companions?

I just got the white wolf companion. I fast travel to a bonfire and I take a rest. I wake up and go fight a group of Udam. They kill the wolf. Then, they kill me. I respawn at the bonfire. My wolf is still dead.

What's up with this?
