Why can't I purl/tension issues

tension help!

Hello all you lovely knitters,

I would desperately love to knit, I can crochet to a relatively advanced level (which is actually probably why it's so frustrating to me that I can't really get the hang of knitting!), but for the life of me no matter how much I practice knitting never seems to get easier?! There are certain things that I prefer as knit items for the stretch and would LOVE to be able to make eventually!

(Context for experience level: I have knit a scarf and a travel mug cozy, but that was before I could crochet, since then not much, I have knitted test squares galore and started a beanie but struggled so ended up frogging them!)

I have tried a few different styles and as I have been advised online that continental is a good one for experienced crochet-ers I do feel this fits a little better as it's holding the yarn how I naturally want to hold the yarn. My knit stitch is okay through this method, although tension isn't perfect I think it will be better with some practice, purling is where I really struggle.

Once I have wrapped the yarn around the needle I cannot for the life of me hold it down with enough tension to pull it through whilst keeping the yarn in my left hand, either that or the tension is way too tight and I can't pull it through correctly.

The only way I can purl okay is to wrap it around the needle and then drop the yarn, hold it in my right hand with the needle I'm working on to and pull through, that seems to even my tension, but then I'm picking the yarn up again every stitch and seems counter intuitive to knitting anything big, so I assume this isn't a recommended method! πŸ˜‚

Idk why my brain cannot get the hang of purling!!

It's possible I'm just not much of a knitter and that's fine, but I really would love to be! πŸ«£πŸ˜‚

Any advice or tips of things I can try would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
