Can the sonoff ZigBee wifi smart switches work directly with the ZigBee dongles? Or do they always require wifi and app?

I have a doorlock that uses zigbee but I didn't need to setup through wifi and my zigbee dongle in home assistant picked it right up. Can the switches do the same or do they require wifi?
