Before I say anything else, I want to clarify that the only console I have owned in the last 20 years is the Switch (I couldn’t resist the latest Zelda games) as I always needed a capable pc for creative hobbies and work, so it was logical for me to get into pc gaming early on.
XBOX Strategy
It’s the 5^(th) XBOX so name it XBOX 5
Clothing naming scheme
Small / Medium / Large
Pack a fun t-shirt with it (customer can select size on checkout)
SKUs
XBOX 5S - 649$ (799$ during the memory shortage)
Handheld - comparable visual output to Series S while on battery, better upscaling, better raytracing
XBOX 5M - 499$ (649$ during the memory shortage)
Series S equivalent - same hardware as the handheld, higher wattage, better cooling, cheaper than the handheld
XBOX 5L -749$ (999$ during the memory shortage)
The full console - Mainstream gamers are ok with PS4 graphics and modern upscaling does wonders especially at tv distance. I’m not saying don’t evolve, just don’t put all your resources into it.
Focus heavily on the CPU instead, to enable games with unheard of npc density with individual routines and with unmatched levels of physics and destruction. If I fire a rocket on a wall, no matter how many particles I see and how beautifully path traced they are, if the wall stays in place, my immersion is broken. If I point a flamethrower at a tree only to see I small black mark where my crosshair was, you have failed me and I will go back to breath of the wild!
Something inescapable for XBOX at this point is windows
The fact that windows has such great legacy support is its greatest strength and its biggest weakness.
We need to separate all this legacy support into its own downloadable package (even better multiple packages based on functionality but this sounds prohibitively expensive if it even is technically possible) and also separate windows versions based on the pc that they will end up to
So we need:
Windows 12 Core, stripped down version for weak office & education pcs
Windows 12 Gaming, stripped down version with only the necessary components to play games and run commonly used software like a browser, discord, youtube etc. It launches directly to a gaming environment that handles settings und updates, let’s you download supported windows apps.
Windows 12 Pro, the fully featured version for more advanced users and professionals. If making legacy support a downloadable package is not possible, just leave it in this version and strip as much as you can from the other two versions.
I hate seeing all those layoffs, I hate that people are getting priced out of the hobby that has been there my entire life.
Microsoft, if you are not interested in gaming, just make XBOX a separate company and sell it off. Don’t take it apart because Keeper and Doom don’t make as much money as Candy Crush.
Times are miserable, let us play our games. . .
