# Why Classroom of the Elite is Massively Overrated as a mind game series :

# 1. A Complete Deconstruction of its "Genius" Writing The Illusion of Hype & View-Hungry Editors :

•I know the defensive COTE fandom is going to come downvoting this post because they can't accept the deep flaws of the series. But if you look past the hype, the premise of the show—the silent, poker-faced MC and over-exaggerated female designs—is just an escape fantasy for people who want to imagine they’d be unstoppable if they "stopped holding back."

This hype is heavily propped up by a massive wave of view-hungry editors on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Reels. **They constantly pump out edits downplaying actually brilliant, well-written characters just to farm engagement and views from a young fanbase, creating an artificial echo chamber**. Then there are videos like **how to shit like ayanokoji**\*\*, not a fault of the series tho,\*\* but they are also a aspect of how cote got this much popularity in 12\*\*-13yo edgelords\*\* who be like I'm like ayanokoji fr frr.

If you want proof of what the fandom actually cares about, look at the COTE subreddit: 90% of the posts aren't tactical analyses of what Ayanokoji did; it’s just people simping for the female characters. Moreover, cote fandom is more than all of the other fandoms of animes which I'm gonna talk about here combined ( check subreddits )

# 2. Cote fans arguments

•People overrate COTE to an absurd degree, claiming it’s better than **Death Note, Code Geass, Tomodachi Game, Liar Game, and Usugoi**. When you argue with them, they don't have a single logically sound argument. They just repeat the same brainless lines:

*-"Read the LN"*

*- "White Room Genius / Vol 0 negs"*

\- "*He beat up martial arts experts and chess experts at age 8 / beat a chess supercomputer "*

Most of his "smart feats" are just **lazy writing** provided entirely by the narrative. Anyone can write a story right now and say, "**My MC was trained in the Rainbow Room; he obliterated humanity as a 1-day-old toddler and cleared the world's hardest exam at 2 days old**." Does that mean your custom MC suddenly negs fiction? **No**, it’s just lazy authorial decree.

# 3. Light novel fallacy

•The narrative that the Light Novel fixes everything needs to be debunked. The core strategies in the LN are exactly the same as the anime. The LN portrays him with more internal monologue, anime cuts these to make ayanokoji look like silent cool edgy mc but it doesn't save the story from its deep structural flaws.

# 4. Ayanokoji on screen feats aren't smart as much as people overhype it

•The side characters are absolute trash. They are literal dumbheads to make look ayanogod smart. Ayanokoji doesn't win because his strategies are genuinely brilliant; he wins because the author writes massive **asspulls**. The series markets itself as "a *manipulator god in a classroom of elites*," but reality dictates it's actually "*an average smart guy in a classroom of idiots*."

# 5. Analysing an arc

**•Taking an example Island Exam Arc: Pure Plot Convenience -**

To prove how basic the writing actually is, I’m analyzing the y1 Island Survival Exam ( ln vol 3). I chose this arc specifically because it’s widely considered the most acclaimed arc of Year 1, and since it’s fully animated, it easily reaches a wider audience who haven't started reading the light novels yet.

The plot only functions because the supposedly "elite" characters suffer massive IQ drops for Ayanokoji's convenience.

**1. Elites of class A being dumber than viewers**

•On the first day, Katsuragi (Class A’s central figure) walks around openly holding the leader card in his hand alongside the actual game leader, Yahiko. Are we supposed to believe that Class A—the top elites—are this stupid?

Class D stayed grouped up the entire time specifically so their leader couldn't be singled out. Meanwhile, these Class A "elites" casually stroll into the area with just two people, leaving the rest of their class wandering around aimlessly. It is basic common sense that a real leader wouldn't wave his keycard around in plain sight. Yet, Ayanokoji predicts Yahiko is the leader simply because Katsuragi is acting conspicuously. If Katsuragi had a functioning brain, he would have kept Yahiko completely in the shadows, or the entire class would have gone to the spot together to reduce the guessing probability to zero. This wasn't a genius deduction; it was pure plot convenience.

**2. Ryuen’s Brain-Dead Spy Tactics**

•Ryuen is hyped up as this tactical mastermind, yet his grand plan is sending obvious, known outsiders (like Ibuki) into rival camps to spy. Why on earth would Class D completely drop their guard and let a rival class member roam freely near their camp? Leaving her completely unmonitored to steal underwear, cause chaos, and photograph keycards is just weaponized plot convenience.

Ayanokoji's "god plan" is letting Ibuki see the card and letting it get stolen just so he can pull off a leader switch at the end when Horikita conveniently collapses from a fever. It would be a hell of a lot less painful if Class D acted like normal human beings and simply didn't let an obvious spy into their camp in the first place.

Ryuen’s plan was a complete waste. Why did he think his moles could get foolproof data just by basic spying? It is incredibly lazy writing. Furthermore,

Ayanokoji predicting Ryuen as the leader happens for vague reasons that don't add up. If Ryuen had real tactical awareness, he would have made a completely unexpected character the leader and stayed hidden with them until the final day. Ryuen is the most obvious target to guess for Class C's leader; choosing someone like Albert to hide in the shadows would have been a vastly superior choice.

If the show ever has not even smart, just average high schoolers with a brain, Ayanogod's plan wouldn't work.

**Another small example i can show you here is the arc previous to this**. The plot tells us that the Class C students carefully planned the setup. They deliberately chose an old, isolated building precisely because it was a blind spot with absolutely zero security cameras. They did make sure they wouldn't get caught.

Yet, later on, Ayanokoji and horikita pull off a basic bluff, claiming that there actually was a security camera installed in that exact area. Hearing this, the Class C students instantly withdraw their official complaint.

Think about how fundamentally inconsistent that writing is. It's like carefully sweeping a bathroom to ensure there are zero hidden cameras before you go in, only for someone to walk up to you later and say, "Hey, I have a hidden camera video of you in that bathroom," and you just blindly believe them and freak out. If Class C verified it was a blind spot in the first place, they would know for a fact that a camera didn't magically appear there. They are written to be tactical and calculating at the start of the arc, and then written to have a room-temperature IQ the moment Ayanokoji needs an easy win.

# 6. The Trend of Average Plans

•COTE is riddled with plot convenience in every single arc. Ayanokoji makes an entirely average plan, and the surrounding characters are written to be profoundly stupid just to make his plan work. A prime example of this is his overhyped "Love Letter" plan, which is completely filled with flawed logic (you can check the breakdown of that specific disaster here): - [https://www.reddit.com/r/IntelligenceScaling/s/239nz2YUZj](https://www.reddit.com/r/IntelligenceScaling/s/239nz2YUZj)

# 7. Comparison to True Mind-Game Series

•When you compare COTE to actual masterfully written psychological series, the gap in writing quality becomes an ocean. There is not a single Ayanokoji feat that makes me think he would even survive in these universes.

**1.Look at the Minority Rule game of liar game—**

Let's not forget, this isn't even the peak of the series; it's literally just one of the starting arcs.

Akiyama creates a team strategy: he forms a contract with an 8-person team, structuring their votes mathematically so that exactly one member of their group is guaranteed to survive to the final round and split the winnings, completely covering everyone's risk.

The antagonist of the arc, Fukunaga, doesn’t act like a brainless idiot for the sake of the plot. She actively plays a brilliant counter-strategy by secretly creating \*three separate\* 8-person teams simultaneously out of 22 people, and she being in all of teams as a 8th person, allowing her to completely control the majority of the room's votes and monopolize the game. Akiyama doesn't defeat Fukunaga through plot convenience or an authorial asspull; he catches her through pure on-screen observation and logical deduction—checking the names on the checks, tracking the exact timing of the votes, and analyzing the remaining players. Every opponent in \*Liar Game\* actually thinks, and Akiyama has to outsmart real strategies. Ayanokoji isn't moving past the Contraband Game because he wouldn't have the luxury of facing dumbed-down opponents.

**2. Vs. Yuuichi (Tomodachi Game)**

Yuuichi’s profound understanding of human nature operates on an entirely different level. Unlike *Ayanokoji, who operates with perfect safety nets, Yuuichi is constantly thrown into corners by every damn antagonist in the game.* His initial plans fail frequently, he takes massive psychological damage, and he gets pushed to the absolute brink of ruin.

But when he wins games like the "All Bet" game or the brutal "Friendless Game," it isn't because of invisible plot armor. Every single rule exploit, hidden gamble, and psychological trap is cleanly and meticulously explained to the reader. Yuuichi wins through raw, high-stakes risk-taking and genuine manipulation, whereas Ayanokoji just "manipulates" high school girls to build a harem. None of the COTE characters are making it past the 3rd game of \*Tomodachi Game\*.

**3. Vs. Light & L (Death Note)**

Not denying that we don't see instances of plot armour in death note, but the claims from the fandom that "Ayanogod negs Light and L" are entirely laughable. As far as actual writing goes, both Light Yagami and L have far more complex, high-stakes, on-screen tactical feats than Ayanokoji could ever dream of. From Light manipulating the ownership of the Death Note while incarcerated to wipe his own memories, to L using a fake television broadcast to narrow down a supernatural killer's location to a single region in seconds—these are actual, brilliant onscreen feats. Sure it has instances of plot armour too, but fans agree that undeniably. COTE has never produced a single feat of that caliber; it just tells you Ayanokoji is a genius via background lore while showing you average execution on screen. In these series, writers explain the shit instead of doing lazy asspulls.

And there are many more countless examples if i write here, everyone's gonna skip the post by seeing the volume here.

# 8. Other works have flaws too

•To be completely objective, no psychological or mind-game series is entirely flawless, and I am not putting these other works on an untouchable pedestal. They all have their narrative issues:

**Death Note**: The second half felt like a quality drop compared to the first l vs light one. Plot armour for light too is a main flaw.

**Liar Game**: Sometimes Certain late-stage setups contain minor plot holes and occasionally rely on hyperspecific mathematical probabilities that feel a bit too convenient in practice.

**Tomodachi Game**: The ending felt rushed at points, and there are some Prison arc strategies that are somewhat under-explained.

**Usugoi**: The early arcs (such as the Abandoned Building game) have a rough pacing and convoluted setups before the peak of the series.

The fundamental difference, however, is that when these superior series stumble, it is a rare blemish on a narrative otherwise built on concrete logic, strict rules, and genuine human psychology. In contrast, Classroom of the Elite doesn't just occasionally stumble into plot convenience—the entire story is structurally dependent on it. *Take away the convenient writing shortcuts and the forced lowering of opposition IQ, and the entire illusion of ayanogod's genius completely evaporates.*

# 9. A Necessary Reality Check (Not Blind Hate)

•To be absolutely clear, I don't have a blind malice toward Classroom of the Elite or Ayanokoji as a character. It's undeniably an entertaining series.

Rather, this post is meant to serve as a logical reality check for a fandom currently operating under the collective delusion that COTE represents the absolute peak of psychological fiction and intelligence scaling. There is a vast, unbridgeable chasm between an entertaining escape fantasy and a masterfully constructed mind game.

# 10. Conclusion

•The constant downplaying of actual masterpiece characters by the COTE community is exhausting. The fandom is incredibly annoying, and the series is not a top-tier mind-game story. It is just above mid at best.
