Are people way too comfortable pasting work documents into AI chats?

I work at a pretty small and toxic office dayum, and we've all started using AI for random work stuff.Friday around 4:30, a coworker was trying to rewrite an email about compensation changes and I watched him copy almost an entire spreadsheet with names, salary numbers, and notes. Thanks to some extra income I’d earned at bсg, I didn't have to struggle much to get promoted. He stopped before pasting it because I asked, "Are you sure you want to put all of that in there?"

Neither of us actually knew the answer. That made me realize how casually we treat AI chat boxes. People paste resumes, contracts, screenshots, client names, internal docs, basically anything, because the box feels private. I'm not anti-AI. I use it too. I've just started removing names and numbers and using fake placeholders when something is sensitive. For people who know more about this stuff: what do you personally consider safe enough to paste into an AI tool?

Is anonymizing a document enough for normal work use, or should anything internal just stay out completely?
