πŸ”΄FOUR STATES ARE DEMANDING FROM META IS SO LARGE IT WOULD BASICALLY ERASE THE COMPANY'S ENTIRE STOCK MARKET VALUE. Meta's own lawyers had to disclose it in a court filing. They called it unprecedented in the history of consumer protection.

HERE IS THE NUMBER

California, Colorado, Kentucky,
and New Jersey are seeking
approximately $1.4 trillion in
penalties, according to a court
filing Meta itself submitted Monday.

Meta's current market
capitalization is roughly $1.5
to $1.57 trillion.

The states aren't asking for a
fraction of Meta's value. They're
asking for nearly all of it.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
HERE IS WHERE THAT NUMBER
ACTUALLY COMES FROM

At a court hearing last month,
the states explained their math.
They estimated the number of
young users affected by Meta's
platform designs, then multiplied
that by the maximum penalty
allowed under each state's
consumer protection law.

That means $1.4 trillion isn't
an arbitrary shock number. It's
what the actual legal penalty
formula produces when you apply
it to the scale of Meta's
platforms. The number is that
big because Meta's user base is
that big.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
HERE IS WHY A JUDGE ALREADY
LET THIS GO TO TRIAL

Last month, U.S. District Judge
Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers rejected
Meta's request to dismiss the
case entirely. She ruled there
remain real factual disputes
over three specific questions:

Whether Meta's platforms were
addictive by design. Whether
Meta falsely denied designing
them that way. And whether Meta
"partially" marketed the
platforms directly toward children.

A federal judge did not say
Meta is guilty. She said there's
enough evidence to actually put
these three questions in front
of a jury.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
HERE IS THE PREVIEW A NEW
MEXICO JURY ALREADY GAVE US

Earlier this year, a New Mexico
jury awarded that state $375
million after finding Meta had
misled consumers. Additional
proceedings are still determining
whether further damages or
platform changes will be ordered.

That verdict happened in a
single state, on a smaller
scale, before this trillion-dollar
case even reaches trial.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
HERE IS META'S RESPONSE

"A sanction of that size has no
analog in the history of consumer
protection enforcement," Meta's
lawyers wrote in the filing.

Meta argues the case should be
narrow, covering only specific
alleged misrepresentations, a
handful of design features, and
Children's Online Privacy
Protection Act violations, not
a broad referendum on teen
mental health and social media.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Trial starts next month in
Oakland, California. Nearly 30
other states have separately
sued Meta over alleged COPPA
violations. 14 more states have
their own claims scheduled for
trial next year.

Meta, Snap, YouTube's parent
Alphabet, and TikTok's parent
ByteDance are all facing
thousands of similar lawsuits
right now.
