A crude sketch of what I am talking about, I thought it looks cool.
In case you wonder, the red lines are supposed to depict mountain ranges.

Indulge me for a minute if you may, I am very sure I am not the first to write here about this.

I know Tolkien once stated he wished his map more accurately reflected the appearance of Europe from many ages ago.

However that may be, some places that directly inspired Tolkien's places around the Shire fit quite well. And it was fun discovering them through that thought process and then mapping them down in relation to each other.
Brill (Means Hill) being Bree (Means Hill). South Downs, being South Downs.
River Lune being the inspiration for the River and Gulf of Lhûn.

One could imagine even more things could fit in if one imagines the map of Middle-earth not as a faithful 1:1 projection of the world, but as an ambitious project undertaken by the Hobbits. Perhaps they combined various maps from Elves and Men into one large world map, vaguely including places like South Gondor or Rhûn (most certainly the Caspian Sea) and filling up the rest with guesses. Like the map not including the Iberian Peninsula and the like. If you look at real world ancient maps of Europe, you see similar things happening (Hecataeus & Anaximander map for instance).

Thank you for your time.

Every time I look at a map of Eriador, I see this.
